Night Launch of Shuttle Endeavour
Space Shuttle Endeavour successfully launched from Cape Canaveral at 2:28am this morning. We went to the beach to watch it ... however with low cloud cover we could only see the first few seconds of it from where we are (which is about 20 miles south of the space center).

But... I took video!

Living on the Space Coast is pretty darn cool.

Fantastic! Kim and I hauled ourselves out of bed and up to the roof of the parking garage at work to try to get a glimpse, but couldn't see a thing. Oh well, it was still kind of fun, and we got to listen to the launch on the radio.

I've heard that this was the last night launch of the shuttle. Any idea if this is correct?

It is hard to tell with the shuttle schedules because the planned missions can change. I don't believe NASA publishes the times of launches more than 6 or 7 months out - just a tentative date.

The next launch is on May 25 @ 7:24pm but I don't think the sun will be fully set at that time. A 'night launch' is defined as 15 minutes or more past sunset (at pads location) or prior to 15 minutes before sunrise. There is also one set for August 28th (my birthday - woo hoo) at 8:24am but the sun will already be up. It will still be awesome though.

Thanks!
I was thinking as I went to sleep last night that I was missing a night launch. They are the best!
Shuttle launches are the one thing I really miss from living on the space coast.
Well, I mean besides you.
:-)

[info]jcbemis and I stayed up hoping to see the launch from our back porch, but it was too cloudy. We have seen daytime launches from our house when the weather was clear.

We drove up to the Pineda Causeway and watched it from the north east bank of the river. Like you, we only saw the first few seconds off the pad since it entered the low cloud bank almost immediately. I took a time lapse photo that didn't turn out all that great... It was a little too bright for the amount of time I left the shutter open. I'll post it on my journal in a bit.

I would love to see a launch live. I did get to see a shuttle on the pad in 1989, but it was the week before launch

Cool! I see you're from Austin, and born the same year I was. I grew up in Austin.. and get back there at least once a year.
